Following
the resignation of Arsene Wenger at the helm of affairs in Arsenal there was a
short period of scare as to who will replace him. not just because of the
sensitivity of the position but also there was a need to get someone who can
take the club back to it all time high. various names came up Mikel Arteta,
Thiery Henry, Sol Campbell amongst other. But, out of the blue the expertise of
Unai Emery that caught the eyes of the Arsenal Board. After successful stints
at Sevilla, Valencia and most recently PSG.
WHO IS
UNAI EMERY?
Unai Emery is a Manager of spanish decent. who had a football career that spanned for 14 years. his playing career ended while playing for Lorca Deportiva in 2004 following a knee injury. In 2004 his managerial stint began with the club where he last kicked a ball. Lorca Deportiva. where he immediately helped the club achieve promotion to the second division for the first time in its history. after which he moved on to Almeria where he again helped his squad overachieve: after guiding them to a first ever promotion in 2007, the Andalusian side finished eighth in La Liga in 2007-08. This prompted a move to Valencia, where he succeeded Ronald Koeman as manager.
At Valencia he went on to lead them to Europa
League qualification in spite of financial turbulence.
Emery left the club in June 2012, after again finishing third in 2011-12. On 13 May 2012, Leonid Fedun, Owner of Spartak Moscow, announced Emery as the Russian club's
coach for the following two seasons. On 25 November he was sacked after a
run of poor results, the last a 1–5 derby home loss
against Dynamo Moscow. this is just to say a few about the Spaniard.
WHAT
DOES UNAI EMERY BRING TO THE ARSENAL SET UP?
Unai
Emery is a proven winner From Lorca Deportiva to Almeria down to Sevilla before
moving to PSG. it can be seen that the Spaniard is a seasoned achiever this is
something Arsenal have lacked following a run of 22 years without a major
trophy both in England and on the continent level.
GLIMMERS
OF HOPE
Following
the Arrival of the Spaniard something has been a significant difference. Unlike
in the time of Arsene Wenger where there will be so much buzz on a transfer and
in the end the transfer will fall through. with the first 3 week of Unai's
arrival 3 of his prime targets have been sign within the period of a week. this
is a huge sign of a difference in the helm. in the time of Wenger there were
bids for Juan Mata(Manchester United), Ngolo Kante (Chelsea fc), Eden Hazard
(Chelsea fc) etc. All these players ended up moving to other clubs for one
reason or the other. But, under Unai within the period of a week 3 players have
already been signed and one can only hope for more deal to be concluded before
the commencement of the season. though despite all of this the end of the
season alone will tell whether Arsenal made the right choice or not.
